Disaster workshop for businesses set
Are you prepared?
In Hawaii, there are many potential natural disasters that can strike, from earthquakes and tsunamis to hurricanes and more.
A two-day seminar from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday offered by the Hawaii Community College Office of Continuing Education and Training can help local businesses be prepared when a disaster strikes.
Darryl Oliveira, former Civil Defense administrator and former fire chief with more than 34 years combined in public safety and emergency management, will conduct the seminar to mitigate threats and save businesses from potential collapse.
Participants will leave with their own disaster preparedness plan and communications plan.

BGCBI hosting benefit craft fair
The Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island will host its first fundraising craft fair from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. April 20-22 on the Hilo Clubhouse grounds, 100 Kamakahonu St.
Admission is free and proceeds will directly support BGCBI.
The craft fair will be headlined by Manuheali‘i and also feature Coconut Girl Jewelry, Hana X Swimwear and With Aloha Lehua.
“We invite the community to have a good time at our fundraiser,” said organizer Jasmine Branco. “Along with beautiful clothes and crafts, folks can enjoy ono Hawaiian food, and music.”

Merriman’s offers scholarships
Merriman’s Culinary Scholarships is awarding $1,000 to up to three graduating high school seniors or full-time students attending Hawaii Community College, University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii, Maui Community College or Kauai Community College who are in need of financial aid.
The students must enroll as a full-time student with their respective college’s Food Service Program.
Anyone interested in applying for Merriman’s scholarship for school year 2017-2018 should see his/her school counselor. The deadline for applications is May 14.

Keaau High to honor seniors
Keaau High School will honor members of its class of 2017 during Senior Awards Night at 6:30 p.m. May 10 in the cafeteria.
Seniors receiving scholarships, academic and department awards will be presented.
